vExpert Program: How to Apply and Why It Matters

The VMware vExpert program is one of the most recognized community recognition programs in the enterprise technology space. It acknowledges individuals who have made significant contributions to the VMware community through blogging, speaking, leading user groups, creating content, or helping others in forums and social media. If you are active in the VMware ecosystem and have not applied, this post walks through what the program is, what you get out of it, and how to put together a strong application.

What Is the vExpert Program?

vExpert is a community recognition award, not a technical certification. It is awarded annually by Broadcom (previously VMware) to individuals who have demonstrated ongoing contribution to the VMware community. The program has been running since 2009 and has grown to over 1,500 active vExperts globally. There are also vExpert sub-programs for specific product areas including NSX, vSAN, Cloud Management, App Modernization, and Security, which recognize deeper expertise in those domains.

Benefits of Being a vExpert

The program comes with a meaningful set of perks. vExperts receive NFR (not for resale) licenses for VMware products including vSphere, vSAN, NSX, and others, which are invaluable for home lab use and self-study. You also receive early access to beta products, direct channels to VMware and Broadcom product teams, and access to the vExpert Slack community where engineers, architects, and community leaders share knowledge. The vExpert designation carries weight on a resume and LinkedIn profile, and the community connections often lead to speaking opportunities, consulting engagements, and job referrals.

The Application Process

Applications open twice a year — the main window in late January through February, and a second window in the summer for new applicants or those who missed the first window. The application is submitted through the vExpert portal at vexpert.vmware.com. You will be asked to describe your community contributions over the past year across several categories: blog posts and articles, speaking engagements, user group leadership, social media activity, open source contributions, and mentoring. Each contribution should be backed by a link or verifiable reference.

What Makes a Strong Application

The program reviewers look for breadth and consistency of contribution rather than a single high-profile accomplishment. A candidate who published eight blog posts, spoke at two VMUG events, and actively answered questions in the VMware community forums throughout the year will typically score better than someone who wrote one exceptional article. Quality matters too — original technical content that demonstrates hands-on expertise is valued more highly than reposts or news summaries. Leading or actively participating in a local VMUG chapter, as the LA VMUG chapter does here in Woodland Hills, is a strong signal of consistent community engagement.

Maintaining Your Status Year Over Year

vExpert status is awarded for one year and must be renewed annually. The renewal application follows the same process as the initial application and evaluates your contributions over the preceding year. This is actually a feature, not a bug — it keeps the award meaningful by ensuring that recognized individuals are actively contributing rather than resting on past accomplishments. The practical implication is that you should maintain a running log of your contributions throughout the year rather than scrambling to remember everything at application time.

Getting Started: Build Your Contribution Base

If you are reading this and thinking about applying for the first time, start building your contribution base now regardless of where the application window is in the calendar. Start or maintain a technical blog (this site is a great example), attend and eventually speak at your local VMUG, engage in the VMware community forums, and share your experiences on LinkedIn or X. By the time the next application window opens, you will have a compelling record of contributions to document. The vExpert community is welcoming and genuinely collaborative — it is one of the better professional communities in enterprise IT.
